Case Western, Mayo Clinic experts, political cartoonist's presentations on event horizon

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center. 

 Tuesday, June 12

NCI postdoc fellow to talk Interleukin 21, colon immunity

Dr. Shahram Solaymani-Mohammadi, postdoctoral fellow in the Vaccine Branch of the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, will present the microbiology and immunology seminar, "It Takes Two Flints to Make a Fire: Interleukin 21 and Interferon-gamma in Inflammation and Immunity in the Colon," at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12, in classroom 4A.

Surgery chief resident to mark quality hour

Dr. Meagan Mahoney, chief resident in the Department of Surgery, will present the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds, "Yes, There's Another Hour on Quality," from 8-9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, in room CW 106 of the Classroom Wing.

Physiology professor to cover hypertension, autoimmunity

Dr. Michael Ryan, professor of physiology and biophysics. associate dean for student affairs in the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences and program director of the Physiology Graduate Program and the Master of Biomedical Sciences Program, will give the Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Hypertension and Autoimmunity," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Thursday, June 14

Case Western obesity expert to review therapeutic approaches

Dr. Bartolome Burguera, professor of medicine, director of obesity programs and executive medical director of the National Obesity and Diabetes Research Center at Tradition, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, will present "Interdisciplinary Therapeutic Approach to Severe Obesity" at noon on Thursday, June 14, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

The presentation is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research and the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center. Pediatric research to be displayed at inaugural event

Children's of Mississippi will showcase important research for UMMC employees, students, patients and their families during UMMC's first Pediatric Research Day event from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, June 15, in the "mural" hallway between Children's Hospital and the women and infants' hospital.

Mayo Clinic faculty to entertain nerve biopsy's role

Dr. Robert J. Spinner, professor of neurosurgery, orthopaedics and anatomy at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, will give the Neuroscience Grand Rounds 2018 Orlando J. Andy Lecture, "The Evolving Role of Nerve Biopsy," from 8-9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, in the Bank Plus Conference Center on the second floor atrium mall of the Methodist Rehabilitation Center.

Editorial cartoonist to deliver bedside humor presentation

Marshall Ramsey, editorial cartoonist for the Clarion-Ledger and Mississippi Public Broadcasting radio and television host, will give the Radiology Grand Rounds presentation, "Bedside Humor is the Best Medicine: How Learning to Laugh Got Me Through Cancer and Life," from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, in classroom S123 (the classroom behind the elevators next to McDonald's).
